Summary and Analysis

This month we started gearing into AP mode. We went through a lot more practice with essays. I needed some serious help with this. Thankfully, I have been slowly getting better with essays.

We finished discussing Frankenstein as well. I felt that our discussions were very unproductive and did not lead to a theme that the class agreed on. I for one hated it. We completely left out prejudice and man's predisposition to hate. We kept talking about the natural order and predestination. Yes, there are elements in there, but we forgot to talk about the people's determination to hate the monster. They all judged him. That says a lot about society. However, I was not willing to get into a large argument with the class, especially when only the input of a select few is respected.

We read Fifth Business as our last book this year. I personally did not like it. Dunstable's writings just annoyed me. I thought he was a interesting character, but the way the book was executed was a little poor, like in Frankenstein. I like the themes, but they didn't stick with me the way Frankenstein's did. Maybe once we do some more digging, I'll come around.

  1. Hi Nick,
Good job on your response to course materials. I like how your talked about the narrative style in Fifth Business. I also occasionally found Frankenstein's and Dunstan's narratives to be a bit tedious. However, I think Dunstan's narrative was much more interesting. I found that Dunstan was a more entertaining character. Frankenstein's narrative made me kind of hate him. I agree that the moral questions Frankenstein raised were very interesting. Good job on your post and good luck on the AP!

  2. Hi Nick,
Nice job summarizing what we've done this past month. First hour also seemed to argue over the theme a lot. We got too caught up in the natural order and destiny and I feel like we missed important elements like the duty a creator has to it's creation. I think we also did some multiple choice practice. What did you think of it? I thought it was very similar to the ACT reading section.
    Good luck on you AP!

  3. Hey Nick
Nice job on this post. You might want to change the title to this to be course response just because at first i thought this was like a summary and analysis to a book or something but yeah. I definitely agree on the discussion aspect of these past books. I thought that we didn't do a very good job in getting to the real meaning and just ended up saying super vague and general things and it just wasn't on fleek. I know that we took a multiple choice quiz. How did you think about that? Was it harder than you expected? How about the critical lenses/literary eras test? Personally i thought that that was kind of hard because it was just so weird studying on the prezi''s. Overall i thought you did a good job!
